UIL 2026-28 Realignment Released Reshapes McKinney and Collin County Districts
UIL released the 2026-28 realignment, reshaping districts for football, basketball and volleyball and altering travel, rivalries and playoff paths for Collin County schools.

The University Interscholastic League has posted the 2026-28 reclassification and realignment that will redraw district lines for football, basketball and volleyball and reshape competition for Collin County and North Texas schools. The release, based on December 2025 enrollment snapshots, will determine travel demands, playoff paths and longstanding rivalries for the next two seasons.
Uiltexas confirmed that the alignments have been posted for volleyball, basketball and football, and the site reiterated the league’s mission: “The University Interscholastic League exists to provide educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests.” Enrollment thresholds set the framework for the changes, with Austin Sports Journal noting that “The UIL released official enrollment cutoffs for the 2026–28 realignment, highlighted by a drop in the Class 6A threshold to 2,215…” and underscoring that “All eyes on Class 6A.”
Regionally, the shuffle includes several high-profile moves. Aledo has been placed in Class 6A and is assigned to District 3-6A alongside five Arlington high schools, Granbury and Weatherford, a shift that prompted SportsDay to observe it was surprising to many readers: “Still stunned at the Aledo redistricting too. Made more sense to send them further west than crossing over all the way to Arlington.” Frisco Wakeland moves up to Class 6A and lands in District 5-6A with Denton Braswell, Denton Guyer, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Hebron, Marcus and Little Elm. Granbury and Red Oak also move into 6A in this cycle.
The realignment sends DeSoto down from 6A to 5A Division I after a recent run of state championships; SportsDay highlighted the program’s recent success with the headline “DeSoto to compete in Class 5A after winning three 6A state football titles in four years.” DeSoto joins District 8-5A with Burleson Centennial, Cedar Hill, Cleburne, Lancaster, Mansfield Legacy, Mansfield Summit and Midlothian. Evrimagaci lists Cedar Hill, Naaman Forest, Lancaster and Mesquite among schools moving to 5A, while Celina, Eagle Mountain, Frisco Panther Creek and Prosper Richland move up from 4A to 5A.

SportsDay reported live from the UIL reveal at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletic Complex in North Richland Hills, where many D-FW coaches gathered as official district images and tables were released. Coverage across outlets characterized some groupings as brutal, with SportsDay calling District 11 a continued “District of Doom” and noting that district maps and images will be critical for coaches and athletic directors planning for the fall.
For Collin County communities, the immediate impacts will be logistical and fiscal. Longer travel and new opponents mean more missed class time, higher transportation costs and expanded demands on volunteer booster networks and school budgets. Smaller programs moving up will face competitive and resource gaps, while programs moving down may find renewed chances for postseason success. The reshuffle also has public-health implications: increased travel can affect student-athlete sleep, recovery and academic time, while uneven district assignments can amplify existing inequities between well-resourced and under-resourced schools.
Some district rosters in the initial excerpts are truncated; local readers should expect more detailed district tables from the UIL site and regional outlets. For McKinney-area specificity, the McKinney Courier-Gazette noted direct implications for McKinney and neighboring Collin County schools, and local athletic directors and coaches will be watching closely as full district lists and schedules are finalized. The next step for families and schools is to review the official UIL district tables, plan for altered travel and budgets, and prepare for what could be intense new district battles on the field and court.
