Coryell County names new veterans services officer, support begins

Coryell County’s new veterans services officer has already started helping veterans from the county office at the Coryell County Courthouse in Gatesville. The Veterans Assistance office is at 620 E Main St, and it is now the local place for military families to begin the process on benefits questions that can quickly turn complicated.

The county officer’s job reaches well beyond filing paperwork. In Coryell County, that can include disability claims, appeals, discharge upgrades, burial benefits, health-care referrals and coordination with state and federal agencies. It also means helping residents sort out deadlines and documentation before a claim is delayed or denied because a form was incomplete or filed too late.

That work carries extra weight in a county shaped by military service. Coryell County has long been tied to Fort Cavazos, through veterans, active-duty families and retirees who live in Gatesville, Copperas Cove and rural communities across the county. The commission also maintains an updated 2025 county veterans service officer directory, and a 2022 directory published through the Texas Regional Council shows the role is part of a broader Texas network rather than an isolated county post.
