Heavy early voting in Copperas Cove fills parking lot, draws lines

A line stretched through the parking lot at the Copperas Cove Civic Center as early voting opened for the Nov. 3 election, and overflow parking filled at times, too.

That opening-day crowd quickly gave way to a larger surge. In the first three days of early voting, 2,854 voters turned out in the City of Copperas Cove, while Coryell County recorded 4,704 voters and 888 mail-in ballots.

The traffic at the civic center turned parking and line management into an immediate part of the election. Coryell County’s elections page tracks Early Voting Rosters and Early Voting Totals, showing how closely officials are following participation as ballots come in by the day.

Copperas Cove residents looking for election details can find them on the city’s Election Information page, which lists general-election and runoff-election information. The City Secretary office keeps weekday hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The city’s first three days also marked a sharp jump from February, when early voting across the Copperas Cove Early Voting Center and the Gatesville Annex reached 1,514 voters, including 749 in Copperas Cove. This July total in Copperas Cove alone nearly doubled that earlier countywide figure, underscoring how quickly interest picked up.

Copperas Cove’s turnout spike carries added weight in a city founded in the 1870s and later expanded as Fort Hood became a major regional employer. In a place where city, county and school decisions can affect daily life quickly, a crowded civic center parking lot was more than a traffic problem. It was the clearest sign yet that many Coryell County voters were already making their choice before Election Day.
