Comcast Brings High Speed Internet to Rural Cumberland County

Comcast completed a targeted broadband expansion to serve nearly 350 previously unconnected rural homes and businesses in Hopewell Township and Maurice River Township on December 18, 2025. The work, undertaken through partnerships between Comcast and the two township committees, brought high speed internet access to all residents in both townships and ends a decade long shortage of reliable residential broadband in these parts of Cumberland County.

Officials said the project was built on coordinated funding and contract steps at the municipal level. Maurice River Township used American Rescue Plan funds and a competitive RFP process to secure the partnership with Comcast. Hopewell Township officials described years of local effort to clear barriers to service and to coordinate rights of way and permitting with the company. Hopewell Township Mayor Robin Freitag said the expansion followed “more than a decade of determined effort” by the Township Committee.

Beyond the immediate connectivity gains, the expansion carries measurable local economic implications. High speed internet increases access to remote work opportunities for residents who commute out of the county, narrows digital divides that affect student online learning, and helps small businesses reach customers and process digital payments more reliably. For rural communities where internet access has been spotty or absent, the arrival of fiber rich network infrastructure can improve job matching, support home based entrepreneurship and reduce costs associated with travel to obtain digital services.

The project also aligns with a broader industry push by internet providers to reach unserved and underserved communities. Municipal officials and the company emphasized that cooperation between local government and a private provider enabled faster deployment than either could likely have achieved alone. That public and private coordination raises questions for policymakers about how to pair federal recovery funds, local permitting reforms and competitive procurement to accelerate similar projects elsewhere in Cumberland County.

Longer term, sustained benefits will depend on adoption, affordability and local support services. Infrastructure alone does not guarantee usage. Local leaders now face decisions about outreach, digital literacy and pricing assistance to ensure the new connectivity translates into tangible gains in education outcomes, household incomes and small business resilience.
