Freeze Watch Threatens Dolores County Crops, Gardeners Urged to Protect Plants
Valley lows forecast in the upper 20s threatened Dove Creek crops as the NWS issued a Freeze Watch for Cortez and surrounding areas April 1.
Valley floor temperatures forecast to drop into the upper 20s Fahrenheit put Dove Creek farmers and Dolores County gardeners on notice after the National Weather Service issued a Freeze Watch for Cortez and surrounding areas on April 1. The advisory warned that the most dangerous hours would come just before dawn, when overnight lows bottom out and unprotected seedlings are at peak risk.
The timing hit a spring season already under pressure. Below-average snowpack across the region has raised concerns about reduced McPhee Reservoir deliveries, tightening the irrigation window before any freeze damage could even be tallied. A late cold snap severe enough to kill tender vegetable or fruit plantings added another layer of potential loss to a year when water supplies and planting windows are already constrained.
Extension agents recommended covering exposed plants with frost cloth, staging water near root zones, and insulating vulnerable outdoor plumbing before temperatures dropped overnight. Delaying certain planting tasks until the watch period passed was also advised as a cost-effective way to avoid seedling loss.
The Freeze Watch designation is designed to give producers and residents lead time to act. The hazard product signals the potential for damaging frost or freeze conditions during the growing season, providing advance notice rather than a last-minute alarm.

The cold snap added a dimension to this spring's agricultural picture that snowpack figures alone hadn't captured. Low reservoir levels and tight irrigation supplies have dominated concern across the Four Corners, but the freeze watch made clear that this year's threats to productivity are running in both directions: too little water from above, and potentially crop-killing cold from below.
The National Weather Service and county extension services continued issuing updated forecasts as conditions evolved through the watch period.
