Spring Health Fair Offers Free Vaccines, Screenings in Cortez April 18
No insurance billing, free vaccines and seven lab panels: Southwest Health System brings its Spring Health Fair to Cortez on April 18.
Seven lab tests, complimentary vaccines and a billing rule most health fairs don't advertise: Southwest Health System and the Montezuma County Public Health Department will host their Spring Health Fair on Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Montezuma County Annex, 107 N. Chestnut St., Cortez.
The event's mobile immunization clinic will provide free adult and pediatric vaccines on a first-come, first-served basis. On the screening side, attendees can access a comprehensive metabolic panel, lipid panel, thyroid-stimulating hormone test, complete blood count, hemoglobin A1C, vitamin D screening and, for men, a prostate-specific antigen test. Wellness stations covering mental, physical and emotional health will also be staffed throughout the morning.
The billing policy is the sharpest detail for anyone considering attending. Southwest Health System has stated that patient-initiated health fair testing will not be billed to insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. Payment is collected at the time of service by cash, check or credit card, with cash or check preferred for on-site efficiency. For Dolores County residents enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid, that policy means planning for out-of-pocket costs before arriving in Cortez, not after.
Pre-registration is encouraged to streamline check-in and the testing process. The sign-up link is bit.ly/SHShealthfair.

The fair also draws on community volunteers. Montezuma County has posted openings for registration support, traffic control, blood draw assistance and educational booth staffing. Interested volunteers can register through the county's event notice.
For residents in Dolores County, where the nearest regional medical hub is Cortez, a four-hour window that bundles seven lab panels, immunizations and wellness education into a single visit compresses what would otherwise require multiple appointments spread across weeks or months. Hemoglobin A1C and lipid readings in particular can surface early markers for diabetes and cardiovascular disease before symptoms appear, giving attendees a concrete clinical picture to bring to follow-up care at their local clinic or hospital partner.
