Bear Creek Fire Closes Roxborough State Park on Easter Sunday
A 10-acre wildfire near Bear Creek shut Roxborough State Park on Easter Sunday after crews discovered the blaze on Pike National Forest land at 2 a.m.

Smoke rising from Pike National Forest land forced the closure of Roxborough State Park on Easter Sunday after firefighters responding to a late-night call discovered a 10-acre wildfire burning near Bear Creek, roughly two miles northwest of the Indian Creek campground.
West Douglas County Fire Protection District crews were paged out around 2 a.m. for a smoke investigation in the Indian Creek campground area and found an active wildfire already established on federal land. Because the fire is burning within Pike National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service assumed command of firefighting operations, with West Douglas County crews providing local support.
Crews determined the fire was very slow-moving and not posing a significant threat. Calm winds and cool temperatures Sunday gave firefighters favorable conditions, allowing them to work containment lines without reports of rapid growth. No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported.
The park closure was pre-emptive but immediate. Park managers shut Roxborough State Park due to smoke and fire danger from the Bear Creek Fire, which was burning about two miles northwest of the Indian Creek campground. The Indian Creek Loop #800 trail corridor, a destination for day hikers and overnight campers, sits directly within the affected zone, making unimpeded crew access a priority alongside visitor safety.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but due to the proximity to a trail area used by hikers and campers, a human cause is suspected. Investigators planned to examine evidence on scene as conditions allowed.
Residents near the park may notice smoke in their neighborhoods. Authorities urged anyone who smells smoke but sees no active flames to avoid calling 911, reserving emergency lines for life-safety situations. Douglas County's DougCo Alert system remains the official channel for any evacuation warnings or orders, and residents not yet enrolled are encouraged to sign up.
No reopening date for Roxborough State Park was announced. The fire is burning near Bear Creek, about two miles northwest of the Indian Creek campground, and park access will depend on containment progress, lingering smoke conditions, and coordination between Roxborough park managers, the Forest Service, and West Douglas County Fire. The Front Range's below-normal snowpack and early-season dryness have heightened sensitivity to ignitions across the region, and land managers are treating even slow-moving fires as high-priority incidents given how quickly conditions can shift with wind or afternoon heating.
Updates on park status and fire conditions are being posted to official Douglas County and Colorado Parks and Wildlife social channels.
