Castle Rock brings back annual Longhorn cattle drive July 24

Castle Rock will send a herd of Texas Longhorns through downtown July 24 when the annual Longhorn cattle drive starts at Rock Park and runs from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is part of Western Heritage Welcome Weekend and will move directly through the town’s core, including Perry Street.

Town and fair listings frame the cattle drive as more than a parade. Castle Rock says the weekend is meant to highlight the community’s history and honor a longstanding tradition tied to the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo, while the town’s events calendar lists the Western Heritage Welcome Cattle Drive as a downtown event with street closures.

The Douglas County Fair & Rodeo calls the cattle drive the kickoff event for the fair and says it celebrates Douglas County history. The fair also marks 1918 as its official first year, giving the drive a clear link to more than a century of county fair tradition. Town social posts describe cowhands driving a herd of Texas Longhorns through downtown, a scene the Western Heritage Welcome Weekend page reinforces with imagery of cattle on Perry Street and in front of the fire station.

That visibility matters in a town that keeps using Western heritage to define itself while continuing to grow. Castle Rock is tying this year’s celebration to America 250 and Colorado 150 observances, adding a civic and tourism layer to an event that already draws families, visitors and downtown foot traffic. The town says its Western heritage is alive and well, and the cattle drive has become one of the clearest ways it shows that claim in public.

The tradition is also familiar enough to feel like part of Castle Rock’s identity rather than a novelty. A prior year’s town page listed the cattle drive on July 25 from 6 to 8 p.m., showing the event date has shifted over time. Castle Rock tourism listings and earlier coverage have treated it as a recurring Western Heritage Welcome event, and one report quoted Castle Rock resident Jim Antone saying, “I love tradition, that’s why I like Castle Rock, it keeps it a little old town.”

The cattle drive’s appeal comes from that balance of spectacle and memory. It brings Longhorns into the middle of downtown Castle Rock for two hours, but it also recalls the days when large herds of cattle moved through the community. As Castle Rock grows around its historic core, the July 24 drive will again put that identity on display in the most visible way possible.
