Flames tore through roof lines in Castle Rock’s Founders neighborhood Wednesday, damaging at least two homes near Lantern Trail and Hampstead Avenue, just south of Founders Park, and forcing three nearby houses to evacuate before firefighters got the blaze out around 3:15 p.m.

Castle Rock Police Department and local television coverage said the fire started at two homes in the area, and one account from the scene described the flames as moving from one house to the next as wind pushed the fire along. No injuries were reported, and Castle Rock Fire and Rescue said a cat was rescued from one of the homes.

Chief Norris Croom said crews were watching the fire closely because Wednesday was a red flag warning day, when hot, dry and windy conditions can turn a small ignition into a fast-moving structure fire. Croom compared the wind to conditions seen during the 2021 Marshall Fire, underscoring how quickly flames can spread from house to house when the weather lines up against firefighters.

The immediate danger was contained, but the damage left at least two homes in the Founders area with burned roofs and left investigators to sort out what started the fire. The cause remains under investigation, and crews were still assessing the extent of the losses after the evacuation order was lifted.

For Castle Rock homeowners, the fire was a sharp reminder of how exposed roof structures can be on a wind-driven day, especially in neighborhoods with homes packed close together. The combination of a red flag warning, a fast-moving fire and one rescued pet turned a single residential blaze into a neighborhood emergency in a matter of minutes, with three families displaced long enough for crews to secure the block and search for hotspots.
