Douglas County High teacher arrested in child sex assault case

Douglas County sheriff’s detectives arrested Douglas County High School social studies teacher James Thomure, 55, on suspicion of sexual assault of a child, and the district placed him on administrative leave. The arrest pushed a Castle Rock school case into the criminal-justice system and raised immediate questions for families about student safety and oversight.

Detectives made the arrest on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. Thomure was identified as a Douglas County High teacher at the time, and the sheriff’s office said the charge was only an accusation. In its public statement, the office said, “a charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” while also asking anyone with information to come forward.

Thomure’s role at Douglas County High School meant he worked inside one of the district’s largest public schools, where parents expect staff to be vetted and monitored closely. Administrative leave removed him from day-to-day contact with students while the case moved forward, but officials did not immediately outline any broader school safeguards beyond that step.

The case did not end with the arrest. Thomure later pleaded guilty in January 2026 in a related case and was sentenced in April 2026 for a 2024 incident involving a 17-year-old student. One later account described the offense as sexual exploitation of a child, and another described it as child sex exploitation and abuse.

For Douglas County families, the arrest and the later court outcome create a clear timeline: a June 2024 arrest by the sheriff’s office, a plea in early 2026, and sentencing that spring. The episode left open the central accountability questions parents usually ask when a teacher is accused in a child sex assault case: how quickly the district was informed, what internal review followed, and what protections were put in place once the allegation surfaced.
