Girl Scouts Deliver Cookies, Watch K9 Demo at DCSO Substation

Douglas County's Girl Scouts showed up at a sheriff's office substation Sunday with cookies in hand and left with something better: a close-up look at one of DCSO's K9 teams at work.

Two troops made the delivery to Douglas County Sheriff's Office personnel, presenting boxes of cookies before deputies arranged a K9 demonstration that gave the Scouts a firsthand look at what handlers and their dogs train for year-round. The visit folded a cookie-season tradition of civic giving into a public safety education moment that few badge requirements can replicate.

DCSO expressed gratitude for the donation and framed the stop as the kind of youth-community connection the office actively encourages.

The Georgia K9 unit regularly participates in public demonstrations beyond its patrol duties. Handlers and their dogs field invitations from schools, churches, and civic groups across the county, walking audiences through the same detection and tracking work the dogs perform on active calls.

Cookie donations to first responders have become a fixture of the annual Girl Scout program, now in its second century after launching in 1917. The program is structured around five core skills: goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Directing boxes to law enforcement, fire stations, and military members has long been part of how troops extend those lessons into civic participation.
