A Lawrence teen who took and shared a nude image of a special-needs student in a Free State High School bathroom received six months of probation, the maximum sentence available under the plea outcome. For Shawn Danger Collier and his family, the case is about more than one photograph, it is about bathroom privacy, disability protection and how quickly a phone camera can turn a school moment into lasting harm.

The incident happened May 6, 2025, at Free State High School, where hallway cameras showed five boys entering a restroom and leaving shortly afterward. Inside, at least one cellphone was briefly pulled out to take a nude photo of Shawn Collier, who was 15 at the time and has TAR Syndrome, a rare congenital disorder that affects his heart, immune system and platelet production and left him without radius bones in his arms. The image was then shared on Snapchat and other social media.

The defendant initially faced a felony charge of aggravated unlawful transmission of a visual depiction of a child. On April 2, 2026, he pleaded no contest in Douglas County District Court to the lesser Class A misdemeanor of unlawful transmission of a visual depiction of a child. Sentencing was set for May 6, 2026, and the court imposed probation after the state sought a probationary sentence and the defense asked for time served. No offender registration was required under either outcome discussed at the plea hearing.

The Collier family has said Shawn was bullied because of his disability and is now homeschooled. They said the school first treated the episode as “a mistake” and required the student who took the picture to write a brief apology, which the family said did not reflect the seriousness of what happened. Shawn’s father, Jerry Collier, and mother, Michele Collier, have spoken publicly about the case as their son’s name and photo brought unusual visibility to a deeply personal violation.

The case also exposed a breakdown in how the incident was handled at first. Lawrence school officials were apparently unaware of it until 13 days after it happened, and Police Chief Rich Lockhart later said the Lawrence Police Department’s initial handling by a school resource officer violated department policy. That combination of delayed response, school missteps and digital sharing among teens has turned a bathroom prank into a broader test of how Lawrence schools protect vulnerable students inside buildings that are supposed to be safe.
