Bombers edge REX 10-9 at historic League Stadium in Huntingburg

League Stadium’s 1894 grandstand and its leftover “A League of Their Own” details gave June 9’s Prospect League game a setting few summer ballparks can match. The Dubois County Bombers used that backdrop to beat the Terre Haute Rex 10-9 at 6:30 p.m. in Huntingburg, a win that came down to the last inning and the final run.

Dubois County seized control with six runs in the third inning and added three more in the seventh. Terre Haute answered with four runs in the second and three in the ninth, but the Rex fell one run short after its late push. The official box score listed 10 hits and eight walks for the Bombers, compared with 11 hits and four walks for Terre Haute.

Brandon Hoffmann earned the win for Dubois County, and Jaxson Howard recorded the save. The result kept the Bombers on top of the matchup at 8-5 and left Terre Haute at 5-8 in Prospect League play.

The game was another reminder of why League Stadium remains a destination in Huntingburg, not just a home field. Built in 1894 and renovated in the early 1990s for the filming of “A League of Their Own,” the park still carries original movie advertisements along the outfield fence. It also appeared in HBO’s “Soul of the Game,” linking the Bombers’ summer-collegiate identity to one of the region’s most recognizable baseball settings.

The Bombers compete in the Prospect League, a wooden-bat circuit with 20 teams across multiple Midwestern and Appalachian states. On nights like this one, the mix of a close game, a historic field and a visiting club like Terre Haute gives Huntingburg’s ballpark a pull that reaches beyond the scoreboard.
