The Dubois County Soil and Water Conservation District used its annual meeting in Ireland to honor local conservation work, recognize longtime supervisors and reorganize its board, a gathering that also spotlighted opportunities for landowners to apply for soil-health funding.

Attendees heard awards for farm stewardship and youth education, and were told about a new Clean Water Indiana grant focused on soil health on reclaimed mine ground. The meeting included a meal, partner displays and a reorganization session that will shape the SWCD’s work in the coming year.

Reports of the Otto J. Bauer Conservation Farmer of the Year recipient varied across accounts, and county officials have been asked to confirm an official winners list. Names reported in different accounts included Charles Reutman of Ferdinand, Burke Farms LLC and Joe Keusch. Reutman is described by district representatives as a fifth-generation corn-and-soybean grower who has embraced soil-preserving methods. “Charlie has implemented other practices, including several water control sediment basins and grass waterways,” district representatives said. Presenters noted that those practices “enhance the soil health, the land’s productivity and contribute to the preservation of natural resources.”

Beyond the farmer-of-the-year recognition, the Jasper FFA Seniors soil judging team received the Ken McWilliams Memorial Award for Soil Judging Excellence. The team members named were Claire Linette, Levi Mehringer, Luke Popp and Jace Wagner. River Friendly Farmer recognitions were also part of the agenda: the county nominated Grant Weyer of Infinity Cattle Company LLC for a state-level River Friendly award presented at the Indiana State Fair last summer, and Daryl Auffart and Scott Balsmeyer were reported as River Friendly honorees at the meeting.

The district used the occasion to acknowledge years of volunteer leadership. Brenda Sermersheim was singled out for 18 years of service; the district noted she was the first woman elected to the board in 2008 and served as board chair beginning in 2012. “She played a key role in securing vital state and federal funding for Dubois County, empowering local landowners to implement conservation practices and improvements. She also guided staff expansion, championed the initiative and growth of the Land Stewardship initiative, and was honored as the 2020 Indiana SWCD Supervisor of the Year,” presenters said. Judi Brown was honored for 25 years of service, and other supervisors participated in the reorganization that followed reports.

The SWCD emphasized that its mission is to reduce soil erosion, promote clean water and help landowners implement conservation practices. For landowners interested in the Clean Water Indiana grant or technical assistance, contact the Dubois County SWCD office at 812-482-1171 ext. 3 or visit the district’s website; the office is housed at the USDA Service Center, 1486 Executive Blvd., Jasper.

For residents, the meeting underscores how local conservation work ties to public health and economic resilience - healthier soils mean cleaner runoff, more reliable fields and fewer costly repairs downstream. County officials plan to confirm the final award roster and meeting minutes, and interested residents should contact the SWCD to learn about funding and technical support for conservation projects.
