Ferdinand State Forest and Nearby Trails Offer Year-Round Recreation and Access
Ferdinand State Forest and nearby trails provide year-round hiking, boating, fishing and mountain biking access for Dubois County residents, with seasonal services and some conflicting trail data to verify.

Ferdinand State Forest, six miles northeast of the town of Ferdinand on State Road 264, remains a central outdoor destination for Dubois County residents and visitors, offering trails, lakes, campsites and seasonal amenities at 6583 East State Road 264 in Ferdinand. The site traces its origins to a Civilian Conservation Corps camp established in 1934; CCC crews built roads, service buildings and what Visit Dubois County calls "one of the most beautiful forest lakes in the state."
The forest promises extensive year-round recreation: fishing, boating, swimming, primitive camping (fee), picnic shelters, playgrounds, horseshoe pits and restrooms and dressing facilities across the property. Rowboat and canoe rental on Ferdinand Lake runs mid-April through October, and the swimming beach is open from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. For visitors, the forest advertises broad access but also a set of clear rules: only non-motorized bicycles are permitted on trails, pets must be leashed, off-road vehicles and ATVs are prohibited on trails and fire lanes, off-road cycling permits are required and available at the office, and a 15 mph maximum speed is enforced.
Mountain-bike users and hikers should note the trail network and signage specifics. SouthernIndianaTrails summarizes the mountain-bike system: "There are five bike trails at Ferdinand totaling 8.8 miles. The bike trails are also hiking trails, as well as partially wooded trails and wooded roads. The trails are marked with Carsonite brand posts with a blue bike decal. They all range in difficulty from moderate to moderately difficult." That site also cautions, "Bikers should follow the trail markers and are not permitted to stray off the marked trails," and notes that bikers may use improved property roads to shorten loops but should yield to hikers and motorized vehicles where those roads are used.
Trail names and mileages appear in multiple sources but with inconsistencies that matter for route planning. Visit Dubois County lists Kyana Trail (1.9 miles), Firetower Trail (2.6 miles), Twin Lakes Trail (1.2 miles), Foxey Hollow Trail (1.3 miles) and Southridge Trail (1.8 miles), while other trail descriptions give alternate lengths for the same names. Visit Dubois also provides a larger acreage figure of 7,700 acres in one passage and 7,640 acres in another. Those discrepancies affect planning, signage clarity and permit enforcement; local forest officials and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources should be asked to confirm official acreage, current trail lengths, blaze colors and where motorized vehicles are permitted on improved roads.

For civic and policy stakes, Ferdinand State Forest is both a public-good amenity and an operational asset that requires clear institutional oversight. County residents and municipal leaders have a stake in ensuring the forest office publishes an authoritative trail map, clarifies permit procedures and posts seasonal facility schedules. Residents should confirm off-road cycling permit location and hours, verify campsite fees and hunting rules before visiting, and watch for updated trail maps at the forest office.
As the spring and summer seasons approach, Ferdinand State Forest remains a locally significant recreation resource; accurate trail information and transparent management by forest authorities will determine how smoothly that access serves Dubois County families, anglers and outdoor recreational businesses.
