Indiana State Police shut down U.S. 231 near the Huntingburg Airport after a serious crash between County Road 750 and County Road 900 left officers reporting possible serious injuries. The north-south corridor was closed as troopers and other responders worked the scene, forcing drivers in the Huntingburg area to find another route around the airport stretch.

Officials had not released the number of vehicles involved, the identities of anyone hurt, or the cause of the crash. The investigation was still underway as emergency crews remained on scene near one of Dubois County’s busiest highway crossings.

The same part of U.S. 231 has already been the site of a deadly wreck. On Dec. 13, 2023, around 5:36 a.m., Indiana State Police and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 231 just north of County Road 900 South near the Huntingburg Airport. Troopers said the crash shut down the roadway and killed three people: Macario Sandoval, 52, of Huntingburg; his passenger, Matilde Valdes, 53, of Huntingburg; and Bryant Doane, 34, of Santa Claus.

In that earlier crash, investigators said Doane was driving northbound and attempting to pass another vehicle when his car struck Sandoval’s southbound truck head-on in the southbound lane. Police said the vehicle Doane was passing was not involved in the collision. The force of that crash made the airport stretch of U.S. 231 a grim reminder of how quickly traffic on the corridor can turn fatal.

Dubois County, whose population was estimated at 44,016 on July 1, 2025, is centered in Jasper and depends heavily on highway travel across a largely rural landscape. U.S. 231 is a key route through that network, and repeated serious crashes near the Huntingburg Airport have made the safety of that stretch a continuing concern for local drivers and emergency responders. Indiana State Police maintain crash reports through the state’s reporting system, with electronic reports available through BuyCrash.
