Timothy J. Waninger, 66, formerly of Evanston, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, at The Timbers of Jasper, surrounded by family. Born April 26, 1959, in Huntingburg to Raymond and Leona (Haug) Waninger, Waninger spent his life in Dubois County, graduating from Heritage Hills High School and later retiring from the Abbey Press in St. Meinrad.

A Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:00 a.m. CDT today, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Fulda. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation took place Tuesday, Jan. 6, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. CDT at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and continued Wednesday from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. CDT at the church.

Waninger was a member of St. Boniface parish in Fulda and was known locally for hunting, caring for his farm animals and dogs, and for spending time with family. Those personal ties reflect the social fabric of Dubois County, where multigenerational family networks and small workplaces shape community life.

He is survived by seven sisters: Carolyn Otto of Birdseye; Virginia Witte of Jasper; Patty and her husband Eugene Kluemper of Paoli; Betty Survance of Loogootee; Laura and her husband Mike Meunier of Evanston; Barbara Waninger of Evanston; and Mary Lou and her husband Dave Rothgerber of Evanston. Three brothers survive him: Jerome and his wife Sherie Waninger, Tom Waninger, and Mike Waninger, all of Evanston. Eleven nieces, seven nephews, 15 great-nieces and 21 great-nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Louis Waninger; two brothers-in-law, Joe Otto and Lonnie Survance; and a niece, Cindy Dezember.

For neighbors and parishioners wishing to honor his memory, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Boniface Cemetery Fund. Online condolences can be shared at becherfuneralhome.com.

Waninger’s passing and the planned services underscore the role of local institutions - family, parish and small workplaces - in Dubois County life. The schedule of services provides an opportunity for friends and community members across Fulda, Evanston, Jasper, Paoli, Loogootee and Birdseye to gather, pay respects and support his extended family.
