A flash explosion inside a boat on Lake Lanier sent five people to the hospital and put one passenger in the water after the vessel was started without its hull blower running, state officials said.

Lake Lanier game wardens were called to Land Shark Cove in Forsyth County just before 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Investigators later determined the boat’s hull blower had not been activated before the engine was started, and the explosion happened inside the hull. One person was thrown into the water and was rescued by witnesses, while the other five people were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The injuries were described in early reports as non-life-threatening, but the incident is another reminder of how quickly a fuel vapor problem can turn dangerous on one of North Georgia’s busiest lakes. DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon said the flash explosion occurred inside the vessel’s hull after the boat was started, underscoring the risk that can build when ventilation steps are skipped before launch.

Lake Lanier is a major recreation destination for Forsyth County, Hall County and surrounding communities. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the lake has 76 recreational areas, including 37 Corps-operated parks and campgrounds, 10 marinas and Lake Lanier Islands. Local and lake groups commonly describe the reservoir as drawing more than 12 million visitors a year, a scale that keeps marinas, patrol boats and emergency responders busy through the summer season.

The latest fire follows another serious Lake Lanier explosion on July 4, 2025, when Hall County Fire Rescue said a nearby fire boat helped reach a family of seven quickly. Victims in that incident suffered second- and third-degree burns, a reminder that boat fuel explosions on the lake can escalate in seconds and leave families facing severe injuries even when rescue is fast.
