Forsyth County's parks system holds a top rating in Georgia, and with 28 parks operated by the county's Parks and Recreation Department, choosing where to spend a Saturday afternoon can feel genuinely overwhelming. Whether you moved to Cumming last month or have lived off GA-400 for a decade, these five spots deliver the best of what the county's natural spaces and community facilities have to offer.

Sawnee Mountain Preserve

Few places in metro Atlanta pack as much history and scenery into a single outing as Sawnee Mountain Preserve. The preserve covers 963 acres and includes hiking trails, the famous Indian Seats overlook, a tree canopy classroom, playground, two picnic pavilions, a climbing area, an amphitheater, and a visitor center. The mountain's history spans from a sacred site for the local Native American Cherokee and Creek tribes to a mining site in the 1800s during the Georgia gold rush.

The most popular trail is the Indian Seats Loop, which carries a 4.7-star rating from more than 8,500 reviews and covers 3.5 miles with 508 feet of elevation gain. The overlook at the summit offers expansive views of the valley below, with the southernmost range of Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains rising to the north on the distant horizon. Inside the visitor center, guests can examine Native American artifacts, educational exhibits about local wildlife, and the story behind the mountain's preservation. One important note for dog owners: dogs are not allowed anywhere in the Sawnee Mountain Preserve. The preserve sits at 4075 Spot Road in Cumming, with the visitor center open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Fowler Park

Fowler Park is one of Forsyth County's largest and most impressive recreational hubs, sitting just inside the county line off GA-9, and is renowned for its blend of state-of-the-art indoor facilities, extensive outdoor athletic fields, a skate park, and its direct connection to the Big Creek Greenway.

The park offers 12 tennis courts, five soccer fields, four baseball/softball fields, three outdoor basketball courts, and one lacrosse field. Additional amenities include picnic pavilions, playgrounds, batting cages, a Braille Trail, a dog park, and a 1.5-mile paved walking trail. At the center of it all is the Fowler Park Recreation Center, a 46,000-square-foot facility offering year-round fitness opportunities, including two full-sized gymnasiums used for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. The dog park near the athletic fields features separate play areas for small and large dogs, making it a practical stop for four-legged members of the household, a contrast to the no-dogs policy up the road at Sawnee Mountain.

Big Creek Greenway

The Big Creek Greenway is a multi-use trail system in Forsyth County that serves as a popular destination for walking, running, biking, and other recreational activities. It meanders along Big Creek, providing a peaceful, natural setting within the suburban environment. The greenway extends for 11 miles, starting at McFarland Parkway and continuing northward, with a primarily paved surface that makes it accessible for cyclists, runners, and those with strollers or wheelchairs.

The trail is 12 feet wide and winds through Forsyth and Fulton counties, ideal for walking, jogging, biking, and inline skating through beautiful woodlands and wetlands. Along the way, the concrete path periodically gives way to elevated wooden boardwalks that lift users over sensitive wetlands and marshes. There are five trailheads within Forsyth County, with the most convenient access points at:

  • Fowler Park Trailhead, 4110 Carolene Way
  • Bethelview Trailhead, 5120 Bethelview Road
  • Sawnee Mountain Preserve Trailhead, 4075 Spot Road
  • Union Hill Trailhead, 5259 Union Hill Road
  • Halcyon Trailhead, 6265 Cortland Walk

Hours run from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. between March and October, and from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. between November and February.

Mary Alice Park at Lake Lanier

For a completely different pace, Mary Alice Park on Lake Lanier sits at 7300 Heard Road in Cumming and packs a remarkable amount of activity into 14 acres. The park features a picnic pavilion, a sand beach and lake swimming area, a swing set, a boat ramp, and a courtesy dock. It is one of the county's most beloved summer destinations, offering direct access to the water in a setting that feels far removed from the surrounding suburban growth.

Mary Alice Park also features over 110 campsites at the nearby Shadburn Ferry Road location, with a beach and swim area, a boat ramp with courtesy dock, group campsites with a picnic shelter, a playground, tent camping areas, and campsites with water and 30-amp power hookups. The combination of day-tripping and overnight camping options makes Lake Lanier's Forsyth County shoreline one of the more versatile outdoor destinations in the northern Atlanta suburbs.

Central Park and Recreation Center

Central Park offers a wide variety of sporting options, hosting eight tennis courts, five youth baseball/softball fields, four adult softball fields, two soccer fields, one turf football/lacrosse field, a disc golf course, a recreation center, picnic pavilions, batting cages, a 1.1-mile walking trail, and a playground. Located at 1950 Sharon Road in Cumming, it is the county's premier multi-sport facility and a consistent draw for youth leagues throughout the year.

The Central Park Recreation Center itself houses two gymnasiums, a fitness area, a mezzanine walking area, an arts and crafts room, a dance room, and community meeting rooms with a small kitchen. For families new to the area looking for a single facility that covers everything from competitive athletics to drop-in fitness, Central Park is the most logical first stop. Forsyth County's top-rated parks system offers these incredible amenities year-round throughout its network of parks, and Central Park sits squarely at the heart of that system.
