Deputies ended an overnight manhunt Thursday when they found Jose Luis Delgado Mendoza near Redi Road in Forsyth County and took him into custody without incident. The 35-year-old is accused of shooting his roommate multiple times at a home on Shiloh Road in south Forsyth County, a violent case that sent investigators through the night and left one victim in critical condition.

The shooting began Wednesday evening, May 6, at a private residence in a part of the county where families expect a quieter night. By Thursday morning, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office had deployed its Major Crimes Unit, Crime Scene Unit and Fugitive Unit, along with other personnel, to locate Mendoza after he fled the scene. Investigators found him about noon Thursday near Redi Road, ending a search that had stretched across the night and into the next day.

Mendoza was charged with aggravated assault, and the sheriff’s office said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues. The victim’s name has not been released, and officials said only that the person remained in critical condition after being rushed for treatment. The sheriff’s office said detectives were notified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that Mendoza does not appear to be legally present in the United States, and federal authorities are conducting a separate inquiry into his immigration status.

The case has drawn unusual attention because it blends a domestic dispute, gun violence and a fast-moving law-enforcement response in one of metro Atlanta’s fastest-growing counties. Forsyth County’s population reached 251,283 in the 2020 census and was estimated at 280,096 on July 1, 2024, underscoring how a shooting in a south-county neighborhood can ripple far beyond the block where it happened.

The sheriff’s office said incident and accident reports are available through its Records Unit, which maintains public documentation for cases like this one. For now, the investigation remains open, the victim’s condition remains uncertain, and the arrest has shifted the focus from an overnight search to the criminal case that will follow.
