Historic Mercy Fellowship Church in Cumming Destroyed by Early-Morning Fire

Fire crews responded to a report of flames at Mercy Fellowship Church just before 2:30 a.m. on January 2, after a Cumming police officer on routine patrol discovered the fire. Forsyth County Fire Department units arrived quickly, but the blaze advanced through the roof and steeple, which collapsed during firefighting operations. The sanctuary, adjoining classrooms and administrative offices were declared a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Investigators remained on scene into the morning, deploying fire-investigation resources including a K9 unit and reviewing nearby surveillance footage to establish the fire's origin and cause. The county response focused on determining whether the damage stemmed from accidental causes, electrical or heating system failures, or other factors, with investigators canvassing the area and collecting evidence under controlled conditions.

The church, long tied to the historic Dogwood Street congregation and about 125 years old, has been a fixture in Cumming for generations. Church leaders and members expressed shock and sadness as they began organizing relief and recovery efforts. Plans for where and when services will resume, and whether the building can be rebuilt or must be replaced, remained under discussion. Organizing temporary meeting space, securing records and salvaging any historical artifacts will be immediate priorities for the congregation.
