Johns Creek's $7.8 million combined Fire Station #63 and Police Substation opened March 31 at 9880 Brumbelow Road, retiring the city's oldest firehouse after more than four decades of service and ending a years-long effort to replace a building that had become a liability rather than an asset.

The 14,675-square-foot facility sits on a 2.11-acre site inside the Newtown neighborhood, roughly a half-mile from the 1983-era station it replaces on Old Alabama Road. That original building, the oldest fire station serving Johns Creek, had accumulated mold contamination alongside plumbing, mechanical, structural and roofing failures significant enough that city officials determined replacement was cheaper than repair. A police substation had been operating out of the Fresh Market shopping center on Old Alabama Road; both units now share the Brumbelow Road address.

The new station more than doubles the operational footprint of the old one, housing Engine 63 and Squad 63 in two double-depth apparatus bays built to accommodate modern truck dimensions. The 13,891-square-foot station house adds bunk rooms, a dedicated gear maintenance area, a kitchen, dining room, day room facilities and an outdoor staging area. A separate 766-square-foot storage facility rounds out the campus. Among the items carried over from the old firehouse: a tree and memorial monument honoring a fallen Johns Creek firefighter, which was relocated to the new site.

Kennesaw-based CROFT and Associates designed the station. Swinerton served as general contractor.

The groundbreaking in December 2024 brought together Mayor John Bradberry, Fire Chief Chris Coons, Police Chief Mark Mitchell and Council member Stacy Skinner. "We have one of the best fire departments in this country and they deserve a home fitting of that stature," Coons said at the time. "This new building and location will significantly improve the experience of our staff on shift for both the Fire Department and Police Department."

Construction was fully funded through the city's fiscal year 2025 budget. Johns Creek assumed direct control of fire services in 2007; the Brumbelow Road facility marks the most significant infrastructure investment in fire protection since that transition. With fire and police sharing a single purpose-built address for the first time, the city is betting that co-location translates into faster, better-coordinated responses across the Newtown area.
