Ronald Lamar Kirk, 75, of Talking Rock was pronounced dead Friday morning after falling from a fishing boat into Lake Lanier, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded just before 9:45 a.m. to the 3200 block of Arrowhead Drive in Gainesville after a homeowner reported a possible drowning. Officers found Kirk unresponsive in the water and a deputy pulled him from the lake. He was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville, where he was pronounced dead.

Kirk had been fishing with his 89-year-old uncle, Joe Franklin Kirk, when his lure became snagged on a nearby dock. As he tried to free the line, he slipped and fell into the water. Joe Franklin Kirk attempted to pull his nephew out but was unable to lift him before deputies arrived.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office said the investigation remains active. No official cause of death has been released.

Kirk's death serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a routine morning on the water can turn fatal. Lake Lanier, one of Georgia's most visited reservoirs and a fixture of recreation for Forsyth County residents, has claimed dozens of lives over the years, with fishing accidents and falls overboard among the most common tragedies recorded on its 692 miles of shoreline.
