Talking Rock Man Dies After Falling From Boat Into Lake Lanier
Ronald Lamar Kirk, 75, of Talking Rock drowned in Lake Lanier Friday after slipping from a boat while trying to free a snagged fishing lure, leaving his 89-year-old uncle unable to pull him out.

Ronald Lamar Kirk's morning fishing trip on Lake Lanier turned fatal Friday when his lure snagged a dock and he slipped into the water while reaching to free it. His 89-year-old uncle, who was also on the boat, tried to pull him back aboard but could not, then ran to a nearby house to call for help.
Kirk, 75, of Talking Rock, was found unresponsive in the water near the 3200 block of Arrowhead Drive in Gainesville. Hall County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call placed just before 9:45 a.m. Emergency crews recovered Kirk from the lake and began life-saving measures before transporting him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials have not disclosed whether Kirk was wearing a life jacket, or whether alcohol or a medical condition played any role in the incident. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which routinely investigates boating-related drownings on Lake Lanier, is expected to conduct a separate inquiry and release findings when complete.
The lake spans Hall, Forsyth, and several other north Georgia counties, and water traffic on Lanier climbs sharply as spring temperatures rise and fishing season draws larger numbers of boaters to the surface. The Hall County Sheriff's Office is coordinating with DNR investigators as the case moves forward.
