Delegate May Nivar Delivers Meals to Goochland Seniors with Feed More

Seniors and homebound neighbors in Goochland had a familiar face at the door this week: Virginia Delegate May Nivar, who represents parts of Goochland and Henrico counties in the 57th District, joined Feed More volunteers to deliver meals directly to residents who cannot easily leave their homes.

Nivar described Feed More as "an incredible partner here in Central Virginia" and said she helped "deliver meals to seniors and homebound neighbors in Goochland." The delivery is part of a program that touches far beyond county lines. Feed More's Meals on Wheels program serves senior and homebound neighbors in Goochland among more than a dozen localities, including the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Hopewell, and the counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Hanover, Henrico, Louisa, New Kent, Powhatan and Prince George. Across that entire Central Virginia footprint, the program provides 2,200 daily meals.

Feed More's Meals on Wheels program is designed to keep homebound seniors and disabled neighbors independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. Volunteers deliver a fresh, made-from-scratch meal every single day, and also perform daily wellness checks, sometimes representing the only human contact a client receives that day. That friendly visit extends the program well beyond hunger relief, helping to combat the social isolation that can lead to further health concerns.

Meals are delivered by volunteers every weekday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feed More provides fresh, diet-specific, made-from-scratch meals to keep homebound seniors and disabled neighbors independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. The cost for the meal service is based on a sliding scale, and Feed More works with clients to determine an affordable fee based on gross monthly income minus certain expenses. No one is turned away due to inability to pay.

Nivar's district includes parts of western Henrico and eastern Goochland counties. Her participation in the delivery route reflects a hands-on approach to constituent service in a community where access to prepared meals can be the difference between a senior maintaining independence at home or requiring more intensive care.

More than 165,000 people in Central Virginia are food insecure, a number that underscores why programs like Meals on Wheels remain a lifeline for the region's most vulnerable.
