Explore Goochland County parks, trails and riverfront attractions year-round
Leakes Mill Park's 176 acres include nine miles of trails and ten bridge crossings for mountain bikers and hikers.

River Road's historic corridor, the James River and a network of county parks anchor Goochland County's outdoor scene, from the Courthouse Green at 2938 River Road West to Leakes Mill Park at 3951 River Road West. The James River is described by county materials as "an extremely popular destination among residents and visitors alike," drawing swimmers, boaters, rafters, canoeists and water skiers and anchoring the annual James River Batteau Festival.
In the Courthouse area the Goochland Court House Green & Trails at 2938 River Road West centers both history and recreation. The Courthouse Green is "widely considered to house the most well-preserved Jeffersonian Court House in Virginia." The Old Stone Jail (c. 1825) on the green completed a renovation in September 2016 and now houses exhibits covering law enforcement and prison life from 1825 to the 1950s. Behind the Goochland County Courthouse Complex, the Courthouse Trails sit on a 55-acre parcel and offer a 2-mile trail system; the county describes it as "a soft surface multi-use trail featuring scenic views, natural water features and areas to enjoy the natural environment." Trails are accessible adjacent to the Goochland County Annex Building.

Leakes Mill Park is a focal point for county recreation. "Leakes Mill Park is a 176-acre facility" at 3951 River Road West approximately three miles west of the courthouse area. The park includes three fully irrigated multi-use Bermuda athletic fields, a concession/restroom facility, two picnic shelters and a large playground, plus nine miles of multi-use trails (one source notes "over 9 miles") and ten unique bridge crossings. County and visitor materials state that "Leakes Mill Park offers a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, but is most known for its mountain biking trails," and that the park "hosts several mountain biking events and competitions throughout the year." Wildlife recorded at Leakes Mill includes white-tailed deer, eastern cottontail rabbits, white-throated sparrows and various warblers; the park is maintained by Goochland County Parks & Recreation and reported to offer free daily access.
Neighborhood parks and complexes provide smaller-scale green space. Matthews Park at 5399 Matthews Road is a 36-acre community park with a playground, swings, picnic area and walking trail. The Goochland Sports Complex at 1800 Sandy Hook Road features athletic fields, walking trails and playgrounds for soccer, baseball and general recreation. Hidden Rock Park at 1920 Hidden Rock Lane in Maidens is singled out for bird watching; Maidens Park along the James River offers scenic river views and "meticulously maintained trails." Tucker Park has produced sightings of Baltimore Orioles and Common Loons, according to local birding reports.
Beyond county parks, James River State Park encompasses "over 1,500 acres" and offers hiking, fishing and canoeing across diverse ecosystems and well-marked trails. Outdoor opportunities listed by county and visitor sources include upland hunting and fishing for deer, turkey, pheasant and duck, upland bird hunts at Rasawek Hunting Preserve, geocaching, equestrian facilities and several public and private golf clubs such as Kinloch Country Club, Hermitage Country Club, Richmond Country Club, Kanawha Club LLC, Sycamore Creek Golf Course, Bogey’s Sports Park and Patterson Golf Park. Cultural sites include the Central High Cultural and Educational Complex at 2748 Dogtown Road and the Richmond West Craft Beverage Trail; West Creek Lakes and West Creek parkland are cited as recreational lakes and trails.
