Goochland County hosts hazardous waste, document shredding event June 6
Goochland County residents can clear out old bulbs, chemicals and paper files at the Fairground Property on June 6, with proof of residency required.

Residents with old garage chemicals, burned-out bulbs and stacks of sensitive paper will have one chance to clear them out safely when Goochland County opens its Household Hazardous Waste Collection and Secure Document Shredding event at the Fairground Property on Saturday, June 6. The drop-off will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2744 Fairground Road, at the intersection of Sandy Hook Road, Route 522, and Fairground Road, Route 632.
The event is for Goochland County residents only, and proof of residency will be required at the gate. County officials say disposal capacity for household hazardous waste is limited, making the one-day collection an important public-safety option for households with materials that should not stay in a garage, shed or utility closet. Acceptable items include fluorescent tubes and bulbs, including CFLs, solvents, degreasers and cleaners, flammable liquids, pesticides and herbicides, aerosols, art and hobby supplies, photographic chemicals, pool and spa chemicals, and thermometers and other mercury-containing devices.

Secure shredding will be available for up to five bankers boxes per person. Each box must be no larger than 12 inches by 24 inches. Paper clips and staples will be accepted in the shredding bins, but plastic bindings must be removed before residents arrive. The county’s annual spring cleanup format gives families a way to dispose of materials that can pose risks to children, pets and waterways if they are tossed in household trash or left to leak in storage.

Goochland County has held similar resident-only recycling events at the same Fairground Property site in recent years, including collections on June 7, 2025, and June 1, 2024. For residents with questions about what to bring, county officials list (804) 657-2025 and dleftwich@goochlandva.us as the contacts. With hazardous waste capacity limited and paper records piling up in homes across the county, the June 6 event will offer one of the simplest ways to reduce household risk in a single trip.
