Goochland Day to feature Active Aging Zone for older adults, caregivers
An Active Aging Zone will bring older-adult resources to Goochland Day on May 16, as 28% of county residents are 65 or older.

Nearly three in 10 Goochland County residents are 65 or older, and that reality is driving a new focus at Goochland Day: an Active Aging Zone for older adults and caregivers, built around practical support, local resources and everyday help for aging in place.
The free community event is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, with the parade stepping off at 10 a.m. from Goochland Courthouse Green and running through town before the festival opens from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Goochland Sports Complex. Along with food, drink and vendor purchases, the day will include the Active Aging Zone led by the Goochland Community Action Program and supported by local partners working across health and social services.
That timing matters in a county where the U.S. Census Bureau’s QuickFacts estimates showed 29,187 residents as of July 1, 2025, and 28.0% age 65 and older. A 2024 Goochland County Community Health Assessment found the county has a higher share of older adults than Virginia overall, while a 2025 Goochland Community Action Program needs assessment identified services for older adults, transportation and housing among the top overlapping community needs from residents and providers.
For families managing appointments, rides and day-to-day care, those are not abstract concerns. Transportation gaps can make it harder to reach a doctor, while housing and support services can determine whether an older relative stays safely at home. The Active Aging Zone is designed to put those issues in one place for a single afternoon, alongside organizations already working on the county’s aging population.
The Goochland Sports Complex already serves as a hub for senior programming, including Tai Chi and other wellness offerings. County senior programs also promote brain-stimulating activities, therapeutic exercises and social events, part of a broader push to support healthy aging close to home rather than forcing families to piece together care from far away.
Goochland Day is presented by the Goochland Day Foundation and Goochland Chamber organizers as a free celebration for the county. This year, the Active Aging Zone gives the event a more immediate purpose for older adults and caregivers: a place to connect with local help, compare options and leave with clearer next steps in a county where aging in place is already a central community issue.
