Goochland launches Witness Tree Challenge for America’s 250th anniversary

Goochland County launched its Witness Tree Challenge as part of the run-up to America’s 250th anniversary, asking students to find trees that had been alive since 1776. The project gave the county a way to turn the revolution’s anniversary into a search across familiar roads, properties and old settlement sites.

A witness tree is more than a symbolic label. The Goochland Education Foundation defined it as a living tree present during a significant historical event or used by early surveyors as a permanent marker for property boundaries. The foundation also noted that some witness trees may still show bullet marks, making them literal artifacts of the county’s past rather than just a backdrop to it.

The challenge had a clear timeline. VA250 listed the Goochland County Witness Tree Challenge from Jan. 15, 2026, through March 1, 2026, and the Goochland County Historical Society later posted a new deadline of May 31, 2026. Goochland County Tourism tied the effort to its VA 250 American Revolution programming, placing the project inside the county’s broader commemoration calendar.

That matters in a county where land use history still shapes the landscape. A witness tree can point to old property lines, survey work and the kinds of places where families have lived, worked and passed stories down across generations. By sending students out to identify trees tied to the revolutionary era, Goochland put preservation, family knowledge and local storytelling in the same frame.

The county’s commemorative calendar also included Independence on the Green on July 4, 2026, at the Goochland Sports Complex Gymnasium, 1800 Sandy Hook Road, Goochland, VA 23063. The event was set to include a reading of the Declaration of Independence followed by a bell-ringing ceremony, another sign that Goochland was using the 250th anniversary to build public attention around its history.

For county leaders, the Witness Tree Challenge offered a low-cost way to draw residents into that work early. Instead of leaving the 250th to a single ceremony or exhibit, the county tied it to the landscape itself, where a tree on a boundary line or beside an old road can become part of the public record of what came before.
