Leakes Mill Park joins Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail in Goochland County

Goochland County added Leakes Mill Park to the Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail on Dec. 15, 2023, giving the 176-acre park at 3951 River Road West a place in a statewide wildlife-viewing network with more pull for visitors and a clearer reason to stop. The designation puts the park on the Green Springs Loop in the Piedmont Region, turning it into a self-guided birding destination instead of only a local recreation site.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources describes the Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail as an organized network of outdoor sites that highlights the best places to see birds and wildlife in Virginia. County materials say the trail system includes 65 loops with multiple viewing stops, while DWR says the broader network has more than 600 designated sites and that many of them draw thousands of birders each year. For Goochland, that means Leakes Mill Park now sits inside a much larger travel pattern that can bring more eyes, more foot traffic and more reason for outside birders to stop in the county.

Leakes Mill also has the kind of setup that makes that designation usable in practice. County park information says the site has nine miles of multi-use trails and ten unique bridge crossings, along with three fully irrigated multi-use Bermuda athletic fields, a concession and restroom facility, two picnic shelters and a large playground. That mix lets a visitor walk slowly along the trails for birdwatching, then stay for a family outing, a picnic or a field visit without leaving the park.

DWR’s listing for Leakes Mill Park places it in the Piedmont Region and says, “At first glance, Leakes Mill Park may look like a typical suburban park, but intrepid explorers will find that it is actually rich with wildlife.” An eBird hotspot list for the park shows 97 native and naturalized species, including Eastern Phoebe, Carolina Wren, Chipping Sparrow and Brown-headed Cowbird, giving birders a concrete reason to check the site more than once as conditions change.

The county’s broader outdoor profile helps explain why the park fits the trail. Birding Virginia describes Goochland as 29 linear miles of central Piedmont habitat and says the western two-thirds of the county is primarily rural, a landscape that supports wildlife viewing close to suburban growth. Leakes Mill has also been used for community services beyond recreation: Goochland County Public Schools listed it as a Sunshine Food Bus site at 2938-I River Road West, where free meal kits were offered to children 18 or younger from June 17 through July 15 with no registration required.
