Goochland Library hosts Handmade Holiday simmer pot workshop for adults
Goochland Branch Library held a Handmade Holiday simmer pot jar workshop on Saturday, bringing adults together for seasonal crafting, community connection, and fragrant home gifts. The program highlights how local library programming supports mental well being, social equity, and accessible cultural activities during the holiday season.

On Saturday afternoon community members gathered at the Goochland Branch Library, 3075 River Rd W, for a Handmade Holiday simmer pot jar workshop aimed at adults. The event began at 1:00 PM and was open to ages 18 and up. The listing was posted by PRL Librarian and a neighbor, and was contributed by a community member. Registration was required for participation.
Attendees created simmer pot jars designed as hostess gifts and seasonal home fragrance. The hands on activity offered participants a low cost way to prepare gifts, practice sensory based crafting, and spend time with neighbors during a time of year when social isolation can increase. Library led craft programs like this one provide free or low cost access to materials and space, lowering barriers for residents who might otherwise be unable to afford supplies or organized activities.

Beyond the immediate enjoyment of making jars that filled homes with holiday scent, the workshop had public health relevance. Community based programs that foster social connection and shared activity can reduce loneliness and support mental health, which is a growing concern across age groups. Olfactory cues and sensory experiences may also help reduce stress and invite positive memories during a season that is emotionally challenging for some residents.
From a policy and equity perspective, the library continues to function as a public health partner by offering programming that serves diverse needs. Small scale events that require registration help libraries manage supplies and space while maintaining accessibility. For residents unable to attend, the library remains a local resource for future programming, outreach, and opportunities to connect. As Goochland residents navigate holiday pressures, public institutions such as the library play a practical role in supporting wellbeing and creating inclusive community spaces.
