Juvenile in custody after threats lock down three Goochland schools

A juvenile was taken into custody around 11 p.m. Thursday after a threatening text message sent to a staff member at Goochland High School forced lockdowns at three Goochland County schools. Goochland County Public Schools and the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office said they began searching the schools after receiving the message.

The threat set off a fast-moving response at Goochland High School, Goochland Middle School and a third county school identified in reporting on the incident. NBC12 News reported that the message was sent to a staff member at Goochland High School, and that the district and sheriff’s office searched schools after it was received.

Authorities identified the suspect as a juvenile who was not a Goochland County Public Schools student. The juvenile was charged with a class 6 felony for threats of death or bodily injury to persons on school property, a charge that can carry up to five years in prison.

The lockdowns forced administrators, deputies and school staff to move quickly from normal routines to emergency procedures, a disruption felt immediately by students and parents across Goochland County. One Goochland High School student described the experience as scary, a reaction that underscores how quickly a school threat can unsettle an entire campus even when it ends without physical harm.
