Drivers, pedestrians and delivery crews in downtown Traverse City will lose the 100 block of Cass Street between East State Street and East Front Street on May 18, when contractors begin a crosswalk replacement that is scheduled to run through June 26. The closure will hit one of downtown’s busiest walking and service corridors, forcing people to shift routes just as early summer traffic starts to build.

The city says the alleys between East Front and East State streets from South Union Street to Park Street will be closed to through traffic during the work, and the sidewalks along the east and west sides of Cass Street will close at the alley for reconstruction. Business entrances will remain accessible, and detour signs will be posted to help steer shoppers, diners and delivery vehicles around the block.

The project is a full replacement of the mid-block crosswalk and will add pedestrian bump-outs intended to make the crossing safer. Harry Burkholder, executive director of the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority, said the work will also include alley improvements near the intersection. That makes the job more than a surface repair: it is a redesign of how people move between Front Street, State Street and the alleys in the middle of downtown.

For downtown businesses, the immediate impact will be access, not just inconvenience. Customers walking from parking areas or nearby blocks will need to adjust, and drivers trying to reach storefronts or make deliveries will have to use alternate routes while through traffic is blocked. City officials are urging motorists to avoid the area when possible to reduce congestion and keep workers safe.

Traverse City has said street projects are chosen each year by the Department of Public Services’ Streets and Asset Management Divisions, along with the Department of Municipal Utilities, based on street condition, utility replacement needs and other factors. The city also uses PASER ratings on a 1-to-10 scale to measure pavement condition, a reminder that even a compact downtown block can move up the repair list when safety and infrastructure needs line up.

The Cass Street crosswalk work has been in the pipeline since at least the city’s 2025 bid notice for downtown crosswalk and sidewalk improvements at locations on Cass Street and Park Street. It also fits into a larger 2026 street-improvements package that city commissioners approved in early March at about $3.2 million plus a 10% contingency, a bundle that also includes Monroe Street reconstruction through Slabtown. For now, the question downtown is simple: the crossing will be rebuilt, the route will change, and everyone moving through the block will need a new plan until the barricades come down.
