Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center plans next phase

Munson Healthcare's Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center began 24-hour operation July 7, adding overnight coverage to a facility that had already opened to patients on the Munson campus. The move is the next phase for a center that was also called the Grand Traverse Mental Wellness Center during planning.

A 2022 business plan for the Grand Traverse Center for Mental Wellness described the project as a community crisis center for children and adults. Munson later announced an open house for December 10, another sign that the center has moved well beyond the concept stage and into phased service.

The center now sits inside a broader crisis-care network that still includes Northern Lakes Community Mental Health Authority. Northern Lakes says crisis services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of insurance or ability to pay, and directs callers to 1-833-295-0616. That matters in a county where a behavioral-health emergency can quickly spill into an emergency department, a 911 call or a long wait for a bed.

For Grand Traverse County, the key question is whether the center's next steps change that experience in a measurable way. A 24/7 schedule gives residents another local entry point for immediate help, and it gives hospitals and first responders another option to lean on when mental-health needs do not fit neatly into regular office hours. The Michigan Health & Hospital Association framed the center as advancing behavioral healthcare in northern Michigan in a July 10 article, underscoring how closely regional hospitals are watching the rollout.

The county is also trying to widen access earlier in the process. Grand Traverse County's E3 school-based mental health initiative is in place at Traverse City Central High School and Traverse City West Senior High School, a reminder that the region's response now stretches from school buildings to the Munson campus. The center's next phase will show whether those pieces connect into a steadier system for residents who need help before a crisis turns into a hospital stay.
