Traverse City to Vote on $171,600 Opera House Roof Replacement Contract
Story Roofing wasn't the cheapest bid, but Traverse City's facilities manager picked it anyway to protect the roof of a 134-year-old landmark before summer shows begin.

The roof over Traverse City's 134-year-old City Opera House needs to come off before the summer shows start. City commissioners are set to vote on a $171,600 contract with Story Roofing to replace the aging covering at 106 East Front Street, a project city planners had already circled in the capital improvement plan with roughly $160,000 earmarked for spring 2026.
City facilities manager David Wohlfert reviewed eight bids opened on March 5 and recommended Story Roofing despite the firm not submitting the lowest offer on the table. His determination: Story Roofing's proposal delivered the best overall value, based on the quality of materials, product warranties, workmanship warranty, and the completeness of the bid package. The base contract stands at $156,000, with a 10 percent contingency of $15,600 built in to cover unforeseen conditions during construction, bringing the authorized ceiling to $171,600.
Funding comes from the city's fiscal year 2025-2026 Opera House Fund, the dedicated account used for maintenance, operations, and capital repairs at the downtown venue. The final contract figure lands close to what planners anticipated when they flagged the project months ago.

For one of only seven surviving Victorian-era opera houses in Michigan, the stakes of delay are concrete. The 680-seat theater hosts national touring productions, the Traverse City Comedy Fest, Interlochen Arts Academy performances, the National Writers Series, and hundreds of private bookings each year. Water intrusion reaching the lighting rigs or sound system could force mid-season cancellations; construction pushed into summer would shutter one of Front Street's busiest draws during peak months, affecting the restaurants and retailers that count on show-night crowds.
The commission's vote will determine whether Story Roofing can begin before the summer calendar fills.
