Flash flood warnings continue for Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem area

Flash flood warnings kept Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem under threat Thursday morning after heavy rain pushed some Piedmont totals past 4 inches, including at the NC A&T University Farm. National Weather Service Raleigh issued a 5:16 a.m. Hazardous Weather Outlook and kept a flood watch in effect through Thursday evening for Guilford, Forsyth, Alamance, Davidson and surrounding counties.

Heavy rain and slow-moving thunderstorms could produce life-threatening flooding in low-lying and urban areas and strand drivers on neighborhood streets, underpasses and the routes workers use before sunrise. The Greensboro forecast page for Piedmont Triad International Airport showed rain, 100% humidity and a northwest wind of 3 mph in the latest update.

Emergency crews were already dealing with the impact. High Point Emergency Communications received 19 water-related rescue calls, and around two dozen people were rescued from water-related emergencies on Wednesday. Greensboro Fire Department responded to five water-related calls, most of them tied to stalled vehicles.

Guilford County was under a flash flood emergency, with water rescues and concern about a possible dam failure, and cars were stuck in parts of Greensboro. A flood advisory also covered Forsyth and Guilford counties on July 8.

Parents making early school or child-care trips, overnight commuters and employees heading into shifts across Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem faced the highest risk until the rain moved out and water began to fall back off the roads.
