Person struck and killed by train in downtown Greensboro

A person was struck and killed by a train near South Elm-Eugene Street and Spring Garden Street in downtown Greensboro. Guilford County EMS said the person died after the collision, which was reported to police at about 9:15 p.m. July 21.

The Greensboro Fire Department also said one person died after being hit by a train Monday night. WFMY News 2’s transcript said the train involved was an Amtrak train, and Greensboro Police were investigating the fatal crash. Investigators had not shared the victim’s identity or why the person was on the tracks.

The location places the collision in one of Greensboro’s busiest corridors, where pedestrians, commuters, businesses and rail traffic all share a tight downtown space. South Elm-Eugene Street and Spring Garden Street sit in the city center, an area where a train strike can affect more than the immediate scene because so many people move through the block on foot, by car and by rail.
