Greensboro’s existing sports network was on display Monday as International University Sports Federation officials toured the city during a regional planning trip for the 2029 FISU Summer World University Games. The federation’s sports manager pointed to one decisive advantage: North Carolina did not have to imagine a blank slate, because venues already exist for all 18 sports across multiple communities.

That matters because the Games are not small. They are scheduled for July 11-22, 2029, and FISU says they will bring more than 10,000 participants from 150 countries and more than 600 universities, with competition in 18 Olympic sports at up to 40 venues across central North Carolina. Organizers expect about 600,000 spectators and roughly $370 million in economic impact for the state, a payoff that depends on Greensboro and its partners delivering a smooth, well-coordinated event. The Summer World University Games have not been held in the United States since Buffalo hosted in 1993.

For Greensboro, the test now is execution. The North Carolina plan already identifies the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, the Greensboro Aquatic Center and NC A&T State University’s Truist Stadium as Games sites, and organizers say the University Hub region stretches across Wake, Durham, Orange, Alamance and Guilford counties. They have also said the region includes 21 colleges and universities and more than 280,000 college students, with university housing expected to serve many athletes in an Olympic Village-style setup. That gives the Triad and the Triangle an advantage, but it also means the logistics will be spread wide, from campus housing to transportation between venues.

State organizers have said North Carolina has well over 100 top-tier sports facilities already in place, a major reason the bid gained traction. The FISU Executive Committee approved North Carolina as host in January 2023 after the state had initially been expected to host the 2027 Summer Games, before South Korea received that edition and North Carolina was moved to 2029.

The bid has been a long one. Organizers describe it as a five-year effort involving more than 1,000 people, 13 universities, five cities, five counties, the state and 53 corporate and organizational sponsors. A March 2025 FISU leadership visit, which included Matthias Remund, Leonz Eder and Jing Zhao, was meant to check progress and introduce the local organizing committee. Monday’s Greensboro tour fit that same pattern, turning the city’s venue lineup into a readiness check with real economic stakes for Guilford County, local businesses and the broader region.
