Greensboro police arrested 23-year-old Ryan Jacob Spencer on Thursday, Feb. 19, and charged him with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence after a woman was stabbed in a domestic-related incident in the Vandalia Road area, police advisories show. The City of Greensboro advisory listed the incident as an aggravated assault in the 200 block of Vandalia Road.

Investigators say the attack began when a woman ran from a vehicle and was chased. “According to investigators, witnesses told officers a woman ran from a vehicle and was chased by a man who caught her and began stabbing her,” the investigative summary states, placing the immediate scene near Covey Lane and Vandalia Road.

A bystander intervened as the assault unfolded, injuring the suspect and detaining him until officers arrived. “A bystander intervened to stop the assault, and the suspect was injured and detained until officers arrived,” investigators reported. Greensboro police transported both the woman and the man who attacked her to a local hospital for treatment.

At least one account indicated both victims were in critical condition when taken to the hospital; later updates show different medical outcomes. WXII12 reporting noted, “We are told the victim is recovering,” and other releases state the woman has since been released from the hospital. Investigators also reported that Spencer was treated and is out of the hospital. “Spencer is also out of the hospital and remains in the Guilford County Jail without bond,” police updates say.

Charging documents filed at arrest list attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. Greensboro Police Department officials titled their notification “ARREST - Aggravated Assault 200 Block of Vandalia Rd” and confirmed the arrest followed the on-scene detention.

The investigation remains active, and police asked the public for help. Investigators noted the case is ongoing and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers. Ryan Jacob Spencer remains held in the Guilford County Jail without bond as prosecutors prepare charging paperwork and the case moves toward the Guilford County court system.
