Guilford County hosts school supply giveaway and resource fair

Guilford County Social Services is handing out school supplies to local students as families juggle clothing, notebooks, backpacks, electronics, transportation and other back-to-school expenses. The county paired the giveaway with a resource fair, tying immediate help to a wider network of services.

The county announced the effort on Aug. 4, and the image caption on the release showed the giveaway included markers, pencils, notebooks and a backpack. Those are the basics many students need on the first day of class, and they are often among the first items to strain a household budget when school shopping begins.

The county’s event listing identified the program as “Social Services School Supply Giveaway and Resource Fair,” which shows the distribution was meant to do more than simply hand out supplies. Guilford County Social Services operates as part of the county’s broader service network, giving families a place to connect with help beyond school expenses.

That broader approach has appeared elsewhere this year. Guilford County held a Prevent Child Abuse Wellness Resource Fair on March 17 and a Fifth Annual Mental Health Resource Fair on April 14, both part of a pattern of using resource-fair events to bring services and residents together in one place. The school supply giveaway fits that same model, offering a visible, immediate benefit while linking families to additional support.

For Guilford County residents, the timing matters because school-related costs tend to land all at once. A backpack full of markers, pencils and notebooks does not erase the cost squeeze, but it can ease one part of it and help a child walk into class with the same basic materials as classmates.
