A 61-year-old High Point man fired multiple shots at a group of people Saturday night before running to his nearby home, where he eventually surrendered to officers who had surrounded the residence, according to the High Point Police Department.

Witnesses said Steve Perry opened fire on a group in the 300 block of Denny Street around 9:30 p.m. on March 7, then fled toward his home on Richardson Avenue, roughly 300 feet from the shooting scene. No one in the group was injured.

As Perry made his way to his home, a K-9 Unit officer began tracking him while patrol officers established a perimeter around the Richardson Avenue residence. Officers called Perry out of the house, and he eventually surrendered and was arrested.

A search warrant executed at the home turned up a Glock 9mm pistol inside. Perry, identified by police as a convicted felon, now faces four charges: assault with a deadly weapon, assault by pointing a gun, discharging a firearm in city limits, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The last charge carries significant weight given his prior conviction, which bars him from legally possessing any firearm.

Perry was booked into the Guilford County Jail in High Point and is being held on a $30,000 secured bond. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are seeking additional information.
