Woman arrested after fatal shooting in Tomball home disturbance call
A 68-year-old woman called 911 after shooting her boyfriend in Tomball, and he died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.
A weapons-disturbance call in Tomball turned into a murder investigation after a woman told dispatchers she had shot her boyfriend at a home in the 1000 block of Village Square. Tomball police said officers were called about 7:57 p.m. Monday, May 19, and found a 67-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds when they arrived.
Officers tried lifesaving measures, but the man died at the scene. Investigators later determined he had been shot multiple times. Police identified the suspect as Nancy Merrel, 68, and said she was taken into custody on a murder charge after the shooting.
KHOU identified the scene more specifically as an apartment complex off Quinn Road and Village Square Drive. The same report said Merrel was transported to the Harris County Jail for booking. Police said the woman who called 911 identified herself as the victim’s girlfriend and said she had shot him, giving investigators an immediate account to work from as they pieced together the relationship and what led to the gunfire.
The case remains under investigation, but it lands in a broader pattern that public health researchers and advocates have warned is deadly. A University of Houston study found Houston-area intimate partner violence homicides rose from 32 in 2019 to 46 in 2020, 60 in 2021 and 64 in 2022. FOX 26 Houston later reported a 34% increase in Harris County homicides tied to domestic violence between 2023 and 2024.
Statewide, the Texas Council on Family Violence reported 161 Texans died from intimate partner violence in 2024, and 104 children lost a parent to that violence. Harris County Sheriff’s Office data show the county’s scale, more than 4.1 million residents spread across 1,788 square miles and 41 incorporated municipalities, helps explain why a fatal domestic shooting in Tomball can reverberate far beyond one apartment complex.
The shooting also underscores the strain these calls place on local police, detectives and first responders. In Harris County, a single household dispute can become a homicide scene in minutes, leaving investigators to sort out warning signs, accountability and whether the violence fits a broader pattern of domestic abuse.
