A 4 year old child died after being ejected during a rollover crash on SR 589 just north of SR 50, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The crash occurred around 3:50 a.m. on November 16 when a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 42 year old Lecanto man lost control, veered onto the grass shoulder, and then overcorrected back across the roadway into the median where the vehicle overturned several times.

Troopers reported that an unrestrained passenger was thrown from the truck during the rollovers and suffered serious injuries. That child, identified as a 4 year old boy from Lecanto, was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to his injuries on November 19. The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Several other occupants were hurt in the collision. A 28 year old male of Homosassa, a 5 year old boy of Lecanto, and a 27 year old male of Homosassa each suffered minor injuries. A 35 year old male of Homosassa sustained serious injuries and was also treated. The Florida Highway Patrol said it continues to investigate the circumstances and has not released further details.

For Hernando County residents, the crash underscores ongoing public safety questions about nighttime travel and occupant restraints on major corridors. The loss of a young child raises urgent concerns for parents and caregivers about properly securing children in vehicles, and about how high speed maneuvers and single vehicle loss of control can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Local emergency responders and hospitals were engaged in the aftermath, and families in the affected communities are coping with the consequences.

The investigation by state troopers could yield recommendations about roadway safety or enforcement on this segment of SR 589, and may prompt renewed public information efforts about child passenger safety. In the near term, officials and community groups may emphasize restraint use and careful driving in early morning hours as the community mourns and seeks answers.
