Child Playing With Matches Sparks Bedroom Fire in Weeki Wachee Home

A child playing with matches ignited a bedroom fire Saturday morning at a home on the 7400 block of Madrid Road in the Weeki Wachee area, displacing four people and three pets, Hernando County Fire Rescue said.

HCFR crews responded shortly before 9 a.m. and arrived to find smoke coming from a window on the side of the home. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which was confined to a bedroom. All four occupants and all three pets had already escaped before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents with recovery.

HCFR used the incident to reinforce fire safety guidance for families across Hernando County. The agency says parents should keep matches, lighters, and other fire-starting devices out of the reach of children and take time to educate them about the dangers of fire. Officials also stressed the importance of having working smoke detectors installed in the home to alert residents in an emergency.
