East Hernando Branch Library Marks 20 Years with Community Celebration
Neighbors gathered at the East Hernando Branch Library for a 20th anniversary celebration with cake, complimentary Kona Ice, children's activities and a community time capsule.

Neighbors and families turned out at the East Hernando Branch Library to mark 20 years of local service, filling the meeting room at 6457 Windmere Road with music, cake and children’s activities. The two-hour celebration on Saturday midday highlighted the branch’s role as a community hub and invited residents to contribute memories to a time capsule.
The event ran Saturday, January 31, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. and featured cake, complimentary Kona Ice, face painting and balloon art by Tony the Balloon Guy. Organizers invited visitors to bring photos or favorite memories to add to the branch’s time capsule, saying, “Have a favorite memory or photo from the branch? Bring it along to add to our time capsule and be a part of our story!”
Branch Supervisor Cristin Howell framed the anniversary as part of a longer local library presence. “The Hernando County Library has had a presence here before this place was built. … We are excited to have been here this long. We offer lots of things to the public: computers, hotspots, [and] we have technology programming,” Howell said, underscoring the branch’s mix of traditional services and modern access tools.
Library staff also used the anniversary to remind patrons of operational details and upcoming programming. The East Branch’s regular hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; the branch is closed on Sunday and Monday. A follow-up Grab-and-Go Friendship Bracelet kit will be available February 3–7 at both the East and Spring Hill branches; kits contain pre-cut and portioned embroidery thread and patterns to make one to two bracelets, are intended for ages 13 and up, and are limited to one per person.

Event rules and legal notices were posted as part of the library’s program listing. Visitors were warned that “Latecomers - Latecomers will not be admitted.” Attendees should also be aware that “Photographs become library property and may be used in library promotions,” and that “Accidents must be reported to a staff member immediately. Hernando County Public Library is not responsible for any injury that may be sustained by persons as a result of meeting activities.” The library makes accessibility accommodations a priority and asks anyone with concerns or requests to call (352) 754-4043.
The branch’s roots reach beyond the current building; staff notes recall an earlier East Hernando location in the nearby Sunshine Plaza where the Winn-Dixie is now located, and a social media post referenced a library presence across the street since 1958. While exact opening-year details for the present facility were not provided at the event, the anniversary offered a moment to reflect on continuity of service, from reference collections and public computers to hotspots and technology programming.
For practical follow-up, residents can contact the East Hernando Branch at (352) 754-4043 or the county government main line at (352) 754-4000 for hours and services. The anniversary underlined the library’s role as a free access point for information and programming, and signals continued neighborhood-focused offerings in the months ahead.
