Four Pets Rescued After Spangler Avenue Carport Fire Destroys Home, Vehicle
Four pets, a dog, a cat, a ferret and a bearded dragon, were rescued after a vehicle in the 18000 block of Spangler Avenue burst into flames just after 4 p.m.

Four household pets were pulled from a Brooksville home after a vehicle in the carport ignited and flames spread into the attached residence, Hernando County Fire Rescue reported. Crews arrived to the 18000 block of Spangler Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. to find a fully involved vehicle in a carport, and the house and vehicle were later declared total losses.
Hernando County firefighters encountered a rapidly advancing fire that had spread from under the carport into the home, prompting crews to initiate a defensive strategy to prevent further structural damage. Responders battled the blaze on arrival and worked to contain flames that investigators later attributed to mechanical issues with the vehicle.
While fighting the fire, crews located and removed four animals from inside the residence: one dog, one cat, one ferret and one bearded dragon. Hernando County Fire Rescue said all animals are expected to make a full recovery. Officials also reported that all human occupants had evacuated the home prior to firefighters’ arrival and that no human injuries were reported.
Hernando County Fire Rescue determined the vehicle’s mechanical problems caused the blaze, though officials did not release more detailed findings about the specific malfunction. The agency’s assessment and scene photographs shared by HCFR show the extent of damage that led to both the vehicle and the home being classified as total losses.

There is a discrepancy in the published date of the incident: most news summaries described the fire as occurring on a Friday afternoon shortly after 4 p.m., while HCFR’s own Facebook post gives the specific timestamp of just after 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026; at least one secondary summary listed Feb. 14. HCFR’s social-media post carrying the incident narrative and photos drew significant local attention, recording roughly 1,600 reactions, 140 comments and 82 shares in the captured view.
Photographs distributed with coverage were credited to Hernando County Fire Rescue. Community responses in the Facebook comments included praise for firefighters and offers of assistance for the rescued animals; several commenters offered temporary homes for the bearded dragon and other pets. For confirmation of the incident report, precise timing, or additional details about animal care, Hernando County Fire Rescue is the primary source cited in agency releases and the media summaries.
