Hernando County Camper Fire Leaves Five Pets Missing, Two Dogs Escape
Five animals are unaccounted for after a Hernando County camper fire Tuesday; two dogs escaped but their five companions have not been found.

A camper fire Tuesday left five animals missing in Hernando County, with two dogs confirmed to have escaped the blaze while the fate of their companions remains unknown.
Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to the scene on April 7. Of the seven animals believed to have been inside or near the camper when the fire broke out, only the two dogs were accounted for afterward. The remaining five had not been located as of Wednesday morning.
Campers and travel trailers present particular hazards for pets during fires. The structures are typically smaller and more combustible than site-built homes, limiting the time available for animals to escape and complicating rescue efforts once flames take hold.
The type of animals still missing was not immediately specified in information released by fire rescue. Whether the camper was a primary residence or a recreational vehicle on a property also was not disclosed.
Anyone who spots animals in the area who may have fled the fire scene is encouraged to contact the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Animal Services Division, which handles lost and found animal reports for the county, at (352) 754-6830. Animals brought in as strays can also be reported to the Humane Society of the Nature Coast at (352) 796-2711.
The cause of the fire was not released by Hernando County Fire Rescue.
