Families in Spring Hill will be able to line up housing down payment assistance, job training, credit counseling and wellness referrals in one place when Hernando County hosts a Hernando Helps Family Development Fair at Hammock Ridge Apartments. The event is set for Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 8274 Omaha Circle in Spring Hill, and county officials said it is meant to connect residents with resources tied to employment, education, health and life skills.

The county’s newsletter says the fair will go beyond a general resource table and include housing down payment assistance workshops at 10:15 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Along with those sessions, residents can expect access to financial literacy and credit counseling, homeownership guidance, educational support, employment resources, and help with mental and physical wellness. That mix reflects the reality many Hernando households face: one visit may not solve a budget problem, a job search and a housing goal at the same time, but it can move a family closer to all three.

Hernando County Housing and Supportive Services says its goal is to help residents resolve interim health and social needs, promote self-sufficiency and improve quality of life through state mandates, contracted services, direct services, advocacy and community partnerships. The county’s housing pages say Hernando County is dedicated to increasing and preserving housing for residents, especially those with very low to moderate incomes, while the Hernando County Housing Authority says it is committed to ensuring adequate affordable housing for very-low, low and moderate-income citizens. Hernando County Health & Human Services says it connects residents with healthcare, housing stability, public assistance, prescriptions, food assistance and homelessness support.

The timing matters in a county where demand for help is rising with population growth and housing pressure. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Hernando County’s population at 221,701 as of July 1, 2025, up 14.0% from the 2020 base, and estimates 96,174 housing units in 2024. Census data also show a median gross rent of $1,298 and a median monthly owner cost with a mortgage of $1,513 in 2020-2024 data. County planning documents project the population will grow by 52% by 2045, making outreach like this fair more than a single-day event.

The fair also fits into a broader county push on housing stability. Hernando County has recently posted notices tied to affordable housing meetings, opioid abatement funds and the State Housing Initiatives Program, which can help with home purchases, rehabilitation, rental assistance and other housing-related services. The county also says its Community Development Block Grant housing rehabilitation program can help income-eligible homeowners make repairs that remove health and safety hazards and correct code violations. For families trying to bridge the gap between rising costs and limited options, the May 30 fair is another local doorway into help that is already on the books.
