Injuries reported in multiple Hernando County crashes, including hit-and-run
Three crashes with injuries hit Hernando County on April 14, including a hit-and-run at Cortez Blvd and Barclay Ave, as repeated wrecks pile up on major corridors.

Three injury crashes on April 14 briefly slowed traffic across Hernando County, with wrecks reported at Commercial Way and Vespa Way in Brooksville, Leafy Way and Holiday Dr in Spring Hill, and a hit-and-run at Cortez Blvd and Barclay Ave.
No fatalities were reported in those crashes, but the locations matter because they sit on some of the county’s most traveled corridors. Commercial Way and Cortez Blvd have both shown up repeatedly in recent crash reports, and Spring Hill Drive at Horizon Drive added to that pattern on March 28, when a multivehicle crash killed one person and injured others.
For commuters, the immediate takeaway is that the highest-risk stretches remain the same ones that already carry heavy daily traffic through Spring Hill and Brooksville. Even when crashes are cleared quickly, the effect can ripple into turning lanes, signal timing and side-street backups at places like Vespa Way, Holiday Dr and Barclay Ave. Florida Highway Patrol said the April 14 incidents affected roads briefly.
The hit-and-run at Cortez Blvd and Barclay Ave also fits a broader statewide problem. Florida recorded 97,902 hit-and-run crashes in 2024, including 246 fatalities, out of 702,162 total crashes, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. That is a reminder that a crash that starts as a minor collision can quickly become more dangerous when a driver flees and emergency responders lose crucial information.
More detailed official reports may lag. Florida crash reports can take up to 10 days to become available, and reports containing personal information stay confidential and exempt from public disclosure for 60 days after filing. That means the full picture on the April 14 wrecks, including possible contributing factors such as speed, visibility or roadway design, may not appear right away.
State crash data also shows Florida wrecks peak most often on Friday at 4 p.m., a warning sign for afternoon traffic patterns on local corridors that already see recurring injury crashes. In Hernando County, the combination of busy arterials, turning traffic and repeated collision sites keeps Commercial Way, Cortez Blvd and Spring Hill Drive in the spotlight as drivers head into another week of congestion and crash risk.
