A left turn on U.S. 301 near Whispering Oaks Boulevard turned deadly when a 42-year-old Webster man on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was struck and killed in Ridge Manor.

Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened about 7:04 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, as a 66-year-old Dade City man driving a Kia Sorento headed north on U.S. 301 and attempted to turn left into Whispering Oaks Boulevard, or the Whisper Oaks neighborhood. Troopers said the motorcycle was traveling southbound when it hit the Kia, ejecting the rider. The rider then collided with a Jeep Cherokee that had been stopped in the left-turn lane behind the Kia.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. The Jeep Cherokee was driven by a 44-year-old Ridge Manor woman. The crash unfolded on a busy stretch of U.S. 301 where through traffic, left turns and neighborhood access converge in close quarters, leaving little room for error when drivers misjudge speed or distance.

For Hernando County, the fatal wreck adds to a broader safety picture that has put motorcycles in the spotlight across Florida. Preliminary crash data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles show 701 motorcycle fatalities statewide in 2024, part of 3,184 traffic deaths overall. That means more than one in five traffic deaths in the state last year involved a motorcyclist.

The state also says traffic crash reports may take up to 10 days to become available, a delay that can slow the public’s understanding of what happened even as a local family begins the harder task of absorbing the loss. In crashes like the one on U.S. 301, the details matter: the timing at dusk, the southbound motorcycle, the northbound SUV making a left turn, and the vehicle already waiting in the turn lane.

On a roadway that carries commuters, local traffic and travelers through Ridge Manor, the deadly sequence raises the same practical concerns after every serious motorcycle crash, whether drivers are looking long enough before turning, whether traffic speeds leave enough margin for error, and whether the corridor is being watched closely enough to prevent the next fatal turn.
